This research significantly enhances our understanding of small-scale field-aligned currents observed in the cusp and auroral regions of the high-latitude ionosphere. The investigation utilizes dual-spacecraft high-resolution magnetic field measurements of the Swarm mission to reveal new characteristics of field-aligned currents across multiple scale sizes and temporal variations spanning 0.04 to 5 seconds.

The authors studied the effects of the geomagnetic mirror force on electron density enhancements in the polar atmosphere due to energetic electron precipitation. Considering this phenomenon in simulations this substantially reduced electron density, which was veryfied by observations. This could have wide consequences for the improvement of atmospheric ionization models.

The manuscript reports the first observations of continuum emission at the poleward boundary of the dayside auroral oval. The unique measurements show that a number of different emission lines and bands contribute to the broadband continuum emission. Even emission structures in the near and far infrared were observed, suggesting that multiple emitting species are responsible for the observed spectral enhancements. The authors suggest that the interplay of different heating mechanisms may be an important factor in the generation of high-latitude continuum emissions.

The study is devoted to a shock auroral event that occurred on February 26, 2023, in northern Scandinavia, and represents the first time such nighttime auroral features have been captured by ground-based cameras. Shock auroras result from a very specific driving impulse in the solar wind. While the primary effects appear on the dayside of the Earth, the authors succeeded in observing the nightside signatures, which are rare and difficult to detect. The study is a successful scientific achievement as it presents newly discovered phenomena that provide new insights into solar wind interactions with the nightside ionosphere.

The topic of long-term changes and trends in the upper atmosphere, since Roble and Dickinson's seminal 1989 paper, remains relevant and current with ongoing controversies. Some of these issues have been resolved over time, while others have become even more controversial. This paper makes a significant contribution to this important topic. The authors have demonstrated that at least one of the widely used established empirical formulae for the ionospheric peak height, hmF2, introduces diurnal, seasonal, and long-term biases into hmF2 estimates. These biases are of similar, if not greater, magnitude than those expected from the long-term cooling resulting from increased greenhouse gases concentration.

This paper gives an outlook on what will happen to the predictability of the ionosphere and upper atmosphere in the case we no longer should have relevant measurements in the mesosphere. It shows how important global measurements in the mesosphere are for the predictability of the variability of the ionosphere and thus for our communication and navigation systems. This is particularly important because the satellites that currently provide us with observations of the mesosphere have all already far exceeded their originally planned lifetimes (e.g. SABER, MLS, ...).

This paper presents a new set of empirical models for describing variations in ionosphere-thermosphere electrodynamics in both hemispheres, as a function of season as well as prevailing solar wind and interplanetary magnetic field conditions. The models are based on combined measurements of magnetic field perturbations and ionospheric plasma drift made by the Swarm and CHAMP satellites. The chief advantage of these models is that they are the first empirical models of high-latitude ionospheric electrodynamics quantities in both hemispheres that are consistently derived. The model codes are open source and publicly available.

The research presented in this paper includes a large number of events during which the neutral temperatures were higher than the ion temperatures. This feature is against what we know from textbooks, suggesting that further investigations on this issue should be performed.

This study identifies magnetic holes in the solar wind and in the terrestrial magnetosheath through multipoint magnetic field and plasma measurements by the Cluster mission. The observations show that the magnetic holes can penetrate the bow shock and enter the magnetosheath. The study suggests that the solar wind magnetic holes may also interact with the magnetopause, representing a new type of localised solar wind-magnetosphere interaction.
